What Does It Mean to Be Vegan?

Vegans typically become vegan because of three different reasons:

  • Ethical reasons (because they want to protect sentient beings);
  • Environmental reasons (to prevent climate change, global warming, etc);
  • health-related factors (because plant foods are associated with better overall health).

Despite this, the definition is constantly changing and encompassing various causes. I became a vegan for ethical reasons, but I’ve also expanded my compassion to other causes. For instance, I try not to buy food or clothing from businesses that frequently use slave-like labor.

For most people, a vegan is someone that doesn’t eat:

  • meat (including poultry, fish, squid, or even insects) ;
  • dairy;
  • eggs;
  • honey;
  • or other ingredients that may derive from animals.

Despite the fact that the ingredients may come from plants, vegans generally stay away from items that test on animals or may harm the environment.

There is no right or wrong way to practice veganism; rather, you will find that each vegan has their own convictions, and as a result, they all have varying levels of tolerance for the various aspects of the lifestyle.

What’s important is that we make an effort to protect animals, and help the planet while we’re at it.

Is Vaseline Bad for the Environment?

The petroleum jelly in vaseline worries some vegans.

One of the countless items made from crude oil, a non-renewable resource or type of energy that depletes or cannot be replenished in our lifetime, is petroleum jelly.

Fossil fuels are regarded as a valuable source of energy because they are cheap and can be transported, piped, or stored anywhere in the world.

The environment is adversely affected by them, though. When coal and oil are burned, they release particles capable of polluting the air, water, and land. Additionally, they upset the carbon budget of the planet, which maintains a balance between the carbon in the atmosphere, land, and oceans.

The greenhouse effect, which occurs when carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere, is a process that, when properly balanced, supports life on Earth. Simply adding more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere will cause temperatures to rise, which not all organisms can withstand.

Because of this, petroleum jelly is still not an environmentally friendly product even though there are worse ones.

Is Vaseline Healthy?

Unfortunately, petroleum jelly or Vaseline is not the healthiest substance.

Although it gives the appearance that your skin is moisturized, many experts liken it to wrapping your skin in plastic wrap. Although it may temporarily make your skin feel moisturized, it’s not a good long-term solution, especially if you want to prevent future skin issues.

Since petroleum jelly is water-repellant and not water-soluble, it forms a barrier around your skin and traps moisture there. It traps contaminants such as toxins, dirt, and other contaminants in addition to moisture.

Therefore, you should search for other alternatives that actually moisturize your skin if you want to effectively moisturize it while preventing damage to it.

The widely held belief that Vaseline accelerates hair growth is not backed by scientific research. It may shield your hair from breakage and dryness, but it won’t encourage your hair to grow more quickly. Vaseline should not be applied to the face or scalp, according to some, who assert that doing so could clog hair follicles or even serve as a haven for bacteria. But there’s no evidence to back up these claims, either.

Summary: is Vaseline Cruelty Free?

Vaseline could be categorized as vegan just based on its ingredients since no animal products are used in its production.

However, the brand claims that in order to comply with regulations, some of the product’s ingredients must be tested on animals. This renders the item non-vegan, as one might anticipate.

On top of that, this product is also not eco-friendly because it’s made from fossil fuels, and the multinational that owns Vaseline is also known for being “unethical” on different fronts.
